March 1 Deadline
Be aware that the March 1 deadline is fast approaching to make your application for your homestead property tax exemption if you are a resident and have moved into a new home. This must be done in person and you will need documentation such as deed or legal description of the property, permanent Florida driverís license, Florida vehicle registration and social security number. Every person who owns and resides on real property in Florida on January 1 and makes the property their permanent residence is eligible to receive a homestead exemption up to $50,000. If you have not moved and previously filed, there is no need to do anything and you will automatically receive the increase to $50,000 from the previous $25,000 exemption. The first $25,000 of the exemption applies to all property taxes, including school district taxes. The additional exemption up to $25,000, applies to the assessed value between $50,000 and $75,000 and only to non-school taxes. The property appraiser assesses all property at just value each year.
