How Do I De-personalize My Home?
Category - Home Selling Questions - Staging & Marketing FAQ's

Interestingly enough, the best way to make your home more appealing is to remove any personal items or pictures and make it look like a model home.  The reason for this is that buyers typically feel like “intruders,” when they enter someone else’s home.  If you have a lot of family pictures on the walls and around the home, you are still claiming it as yours and making it more difficult for the buyer to envision it as his or her home.  You want your home to impart the same feeling you get when you visit a model home in a subdivision.  Usually, these homes are professionally decorated in the latest colors and decorating schemes.  They include table settings and wall decorations, which are neutral and could belong to anyone.

In order to de-personalize your house, you should remove knick-knacks and other items of a personal nature. If you have transformed a bedroom into anything other than a bedroom, you want to change it back to its original purpose.  The only exception would be a home office, since most buyers probably will have the same need for a desk room or private office space.
