What are common areas?

In an apartment complex, for example, land or improvements designated for the use and benefit of all residents are known as common areas. Common areas frequently include such amenities as corridors or hall areas and elevators, parks, playgrounds, pool and barbecue areas.

Fees charged directly to tenants by owners for upkeep of common areas are knows as common area maintenance fees.
